Thought of the Day:Faith in the divine plan turns uncertainty into a sacred adventure.
Tulsi leaves are given along with Tirtha when going to temple or performing puja at home. We put it in our mouth with devotion and chew it well and eat it.
But our elders never used to say "Tulsi should not be bitten by the teeth, should be swallowed directly". If that's one reason why it hurts God, the real reason is your dental health.
Let's see here what is the "chemical process" (Chemical Reaction) that takes place inside the mouth after chewing Tulsi leaf.
Tulsi leaves contain a very high amount of mercury. When we chew a leaf with our teeth, this mercury is released and hits our teeth.
If mercury comes into contact with the tooth, it eats the protective layer (Enamel) on the tooth. This causes the teeth to rot or darken quickly.
The reason why our teeth are white and hard is because of the 'enamel' on them. Tulsi leaf juice and the iron content in it is like an enemy to enamel.
If you are in the habit of chewing Tulsi daily, your teeth will wear down quickly and sensitivity will start. If you drink cold water, your teeth will hurt.
Tulsi leaf has acidic nature. When this is chewed, the alkaline balance in the mouth fluctuates.
This can lead to gum problems and yellowing of teeth in the long run. Although good for health, it is not good for teeth.

Only if we swallow Tulsi leaf, our body will get its full benefits. Put the leaf in your mouth, drink some water and swallow it straight away.
Or soak Tulsi leaves in water and drink that water (Tulsi Water). This way the mercury does not touch the teeth, but the essence of the leaf gets into the stomach.
An even easier way is to cut basil leaves into small pieces and swallow them with yogurt or fruit. Then there is no damage to the tooth.
It is best to drink the decoction when there is a sore throat or cough, even then there is no need to chew the leaves.
Henceforth when you get Tulsi Prasada, please do not chew. "Tulsamma will hurt" the elder said, indirectly warning "your tooth will get damaged".
If we understand both science and tradition, our health is in our own hands.
Note:This article is based on the studies conducted by scientists about the chemical elements Mercury and Iron in Tulsi leaf. It is a fact of dental science that these factors erode tooth enamel. Tulsi is safe to swallow or consume in decoction form.
