When Ravana is on the verge of defeat in the Ramayana war, he seeks the help of his own “Ahi Ravana” (Mairavan), the king of the underworld. Ahi Ravana is a great illusionist, he comes unseen and kidnaps Rama and Lakshmana and goes to the underworld.

When Hanuman goes to Patala in search of Rama, he learns that Ahi Ravana's soul resides there in five directions or five lights. It is his secret that Ahi Ravana will die only if he chooses those five lamps at the same time.

Hanuman chose 5 lamps in one breath

Then Hanuman assumes the Panchmukhi (five-faced) form to pick those five lights together. Hanuman to the east, Narasimha to the south, Garuda to the west, Varaha to the north and Hayagriva to the sky.

Blowing loudly from these five faces at once, choosing those five lamps, Ahi kills Ravana. Since then, this five-faced form had the special power to destroy witchcraft and magic.

A panacea for witchcraft
